Venice, June 2020 - Hostaria in Certosa, the Alajmo Group's new summer pop-up restaurant opens on La Certosa Island in Venice in collaboration with Vento di Venezia, the company founded by Alberto Sonino who manages the island and the Venice Certosa Marina. The casual restaurant serves simple summer fare, combined with young, friendly, Alajmo-style service.

THE CONCEPT

The idea behind Hostaria was first discussed less than two months ago in the midst of the pandemic. "It's an incredible story," says Raffaele Alajmo. “On the morning of Saturday, April 25th, I received a text message from Alberto Sonino suggesting we open on Certosa and, within a matter of days, we were already working on the new format. Many of our staff members contributed directly to the project and to bringing the city of Venice back to life.”

Open 7 days a week from 9 am to midnight, Hostaria in Certosa is the perfect place to spend a lazy summer day, offering everything from Italian-style breakfasts, to mid-morning tramezzini and spritzes, to lunch, dinner and after-dinner cocktails prepared by the Alajmo group’s head bartender, Lucas Kelm.

The restaurant, which can seat about a hundred people outdoors and about thirty indoors, is located at the end of the vaporetto dock. The interiors are modern with many nautical details, including the staff uniforms made with technical materials used by yacht crews. Italian lighting designer Davide Groppi's lamps were selected for the tables to create a sense of intimacy and warmth, particularly in the evening.

The Hostaria also offers take-away service managed through a digital platform on the Alajmo website, allowing visitors who arrive by private boat can easily dock in the marina and pick-up their order.

THE ISLAND

"Until just over a decade ago," explains Alberto Sonino, "Certosa was one of the many abandoned stateowned islands of the lagoon. Recently, it was used for military activity, while historically it housed a magnificent monastic complex. Strategically positioned near the center of Venice, between Lido and the Arsenale, Certosa is currently the subject of an urban development program managed by the Vento di Venezia company which, through a public-private partnership with the Municipality of Venice, has reclaimed the island and is gradually transforming the former military base into a large natural park, ideal for walks and picnics with family and friends: an oasis open to all in the Venetian lagoon.”

However, the island remains primarily a yachting destination and offers services for leisure sailers, including a tourist port with over three hundred slips for boats of all sizes, as well as a hotel with spaces for conferences and events, a restoration facility for boats, a sailing school, as well as kayak and motor boat rentals.

THE MENU

"Hostaria in Certosa offers the chance to spend time outside in the middle of the Venetian lagoon, while enjoying easy, straightforward cuisine that reassures all palates and reveals the beauty of our territory through its simplicity," explains Massimiliano Alajmo.

The menu includes dishes made with local ingredients such as baby Venetian octopus served with olive oil, garlic lemon, parsley ande boiled potatoes; amberjack tartar with salad and tartar sauce; spaghetti with clams, extra virgin olive oil, chilli pepper, celery and tomatoes; or Venetian deep-fried calamari, onion rings and squash blossoms.

There is no shortage of meat dishes such as veal in a tuna sauce with green beans and balsamic capers; the Helmsman's Sandwich, a cheeseburger with French fries; and spit-roasted fowl like chicken in mustard and red spices or guinea hen with sage and rosemary, both served with roasted potatoes.

Those looking for a light, vegetable-driven lunch or dinner, can choose between melon, watermelon, cucumber, celery and basil salad; mixed rice salad with curry, chili pepper, turmeric, summer vegetables, and carrot puree; MariaPia’s eggplant parmesan; or grilled vegetables with oil and basil. A small vegetable garden has also been planted which, for the time being, supplies the restaurant with aromatic herbs and tomatoes, but plans for expanding the garden are already in the works.

For dessert, the menu includes soft serve ice cream, granita and treats from the MammaRita pastry kitchen, such as Torta Leone, a chocolate stout cake, Torta Venezia, a chocolate layer cake, and the Focaccia Mediterranean, a panettone-like leavened bread made with extra virgin olive oil, oregano and candied capers, olives, chili peppers and lemon peel.

To drink, Hostaria offers a wide selection of wines put together by our sommeliers, craft beers made exclusively for Alajmo by the Baladin craft brewery, aperitivos, cocktails and coffee drinks prepared with a special blend from Gianni Frasi, the famous Italian roaster of Laboratorio Giamaica Caffè in Verona.

HOW TO GET THERE…

By vaporetto (Certosa stop)

From 6 am to 9 pm, lines 4.1 and 4.2 depart for the island every 20 minutes

From 9 pm to midnight, lines 4.1 and 4.2 depart for the island every 30 minutes, but you must request

the stop.

From 11:30 pm to 6:30 am, you can call a free shuttle at +39 320 6583454 which will take you to S. Elena dock near the L.Penzo stadium. From S. Elena, the N line that will take you around Venice. It is also possible to reach the island with the Alilaguna Red line during the day (active from April to October) and the Blue line at night.

With your own boat entering from the port of Lido ...

The Certosa marina north entrance can be reached via the Vignole canal. Stay to the right at the Sant'Andrea fort, pass between the Certosa island and the Vignole island. The south entrance can be reached by the canal for larger ships by keeping Sant'Elena island on your left and taking the Certosa canal after leaving the ACTV public service pier starboard.
